Just as your favorite cocktail bar swaps out spritzes and citrusy highballs for warming toddies and spiced Old Fashioneds when the weather turns, your fragrance wardrobe deserves an intentional, seasonal shift. While many of the best winter colognes use classic, masculine ingredients—leather, musk, tobacco—we’re making a case for something a little spicier.
Ginger, with its fresh edge, provides both warmth and a crisp, invigorating brightness that feels particularly suited to frosty days. Whether blended with zesty citrus or deep, woody undertones, ginger gives any fragrance a lively character that will complement the cozy layers of your winter gear.
“It has a spicy, fresh aspect that provides. It also amplifies other ingredients. For me, the key is to use it in a very low dosage,” says Julian Bedel, founder and CEO of the Argentinian perfume house Fueguia 1833.
Ginger’s charm lies in its versatility. It can be peppery and lively, bringing a burst of energy, or it can lean closer to the warmth of spices and woods, creating an enveloping, comforting scent. Like many of the best fragrance notes, its application must be approached with reverence and restraint.
“Ginger is very volatile, it delivers an interesting facet when used as a top note, using it with nutmeg and pink pepper for example can provide a misterioso opening,” Bedel adds. “Ginger can disguise very well with other naturals, but still add a key facet in the formula.”
The following selection includes refined, minimalist scents from sophisticated ateliers, as well as bold and opulent blends from edgy fragrance houses. Whichever bottle you choose, it’ll dash of elegance and masculine warmth, and serve as a welcome companion for the long nights and chilly days ahead.
