11 World-Class Black-Owned Skincare and Fragrance Brands

For years, Black-owned skincare brands have been unfairly boxed into a niche. But the truth is, the best of these brands were never just about filling a gap; they were about raising the standard for what thoughtful, effective grooming can be. Built with melanin-rich skin in mind, they address concerns like inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and barrier repair in ways that benefit everyone.

“[Years ago] mainstream brands weren’t always inclusive, or even thoughtful about how their products worked on different skin tones,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Corey Hartman. “And even when [people of color] voiced that, we didn’t see much change. It wasn’t until Black founders had the power to direct product development that we started seeing real innovation.”

That innovation, he explains, wasn’t just about what’s in the formula, but also who the formula was tested on. “If your product hasn’t been studied on a range of skin tones, you can’t truly say it’s effective (or safe) for everyone,” Dr. Hartman says. “Black-owned brands have been leading the charge in inclusive testing and ingredient selection, and that benefits all skin types.”

There’s also a psychological—and economic—impact to this shift. According to InsightAce’s April report, the global Black beauty market is experiencing substantial growth, with a predicted market size of $31.6 billion by 2034. “Black consumers are not just looking for representation, they want products that work,” Hartman adds. “And when they do? Social media will take it and run. If it performs, people will find it, and they’ll share it. Regardless of their skin tone.”

The same applies to cologne. Often overlooked in these conversations, Black-owned fragrance brands are quietly reshaping what luxury smells like. These aren’t just perfumes in sleek packaging, they’re complex, prestige-level blends that rival legacy maisons and are crafted for anyone with good taste. As Dr. Hartman puts it, it’s not about exclusion or separation; it’s about expanding the spectrum. “Yes, we want to be seen for the unique needs our skin might have,” he says. “But that doesn’t mean the products are only for us. It just means they were made with more intention, and that’s something everyone can benefit from.”

Below, a curated lineup of Black-owned skincare and fragrance finds that prove when products are developed with purpose and expertise, they deliver for everyone.
