A woman says she was called “old fashioned” because she took issue with a younger family member bringing a newborn to a pub — and a lot of people on the internet seem to agree with the assessment.
The woman detailed her experience on the “Am I Being Unreasonable” section of the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, which is a place where women can go to seek input from other women about interpersonal issues.
In her account posted on Wednesday, April 9, the woman — who does not specify her own age — explained that a 17-year-old family member gave birth to her first baby the previous day. She said it was a “normal delivery but an episiotomy” and noted that the baby was a “healthy” weight and the mother was discharged from the hospital the following day.

The issue? The original poster (OP) said that the new mom was at a local pub within a “couple hours” of being discharged, clarifying that she was “not drinking alcohol just showing baby off and eating a meal.”
“Am I right in thinking a day old baby […] is really too young to be in a pub or anywhere really,” the OP asked, before adding that she is also “worried” that the mother “should be resting.”

“Other family members have said I’m being old fashioned,” she wrote at the end of her post.
The majority of post commenters said that they personally didn’t find anything wrong with the new mom getting out and about with her baby as long as she had the energy to do so.
“I was in the pub the day after my baby was born, or maybe it was the day after that. Met my brother and sister in law to show him off, and I had a pint too!” one person shared, adding, “You only need to rest if you need to rest.”

“If she felt up to it then that’s up to her. It’s not like the days when pubs were full of smokers,” said someone else.
Another person added: “As long as mom feels fine I don’t see an issue. Everyone’s birth is different and personally I wouldn’t judge another mom for taking her baby out. Some people power on and others choose to rest, there’s no right or wrong, it’s a very personal choice.”
