An 18-year-old boy has died and another teenager has been hospitalized following a jet ski crash in Scotland.
The teen died after a jet ski crashed into a pier at Gremista Marina in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, which is north of Scotland, on Tuesday, April 22, Police Scotland confirmed to PEOPLE via email.
A 17-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital for treatment following the incident.
The 18-year-old, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The jet ski had reportedly been bought just hours before the crash, according to BBC News.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances,” Chief Inspector Chris Sewell of Police Scotland said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died.”

According to BBC News, the RNLI Lerwick lifeboat, a coastguard rescue helicopter and emergency crews responded to the incident.
“Lerwick lifeboat was tasked shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, April 22, to a multi-agency incident at Catch Pier in Lerwick,” an RNLI spokesperson said, per local media outlet STV News. “The RNLI lifeboat supported Lerwick Coastguard Rescue Team, a coastguard rescue helicopter, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland.”

Emma MacDonald, the leader of Shetland Islands Council, said the community was “shocked and saddened” following the tragic news.
She told BBC Scotland News, “I think I’d like to pay real tribute to our emergency services who obviously had to deal with a really tragic situation.”
“And I think everybody in the community would like to do as I’m doing now in passing on all our love and thoughts to all families involved,” she added.
