Renault’s New ‘Mini-Supercar’ Will Be Its Most Expensive Car Ever

The new Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a highly lovable homage to Renault’s past, but it will come at a steep starting price: €155,000, or around $176,000, making it the most expensive Renault ever.

The all-electric 5 Turbo 3E makes 540 brake horsepower, and Renault calls it a “mini-supercar,” which is enough of a sales pitch for most lovers of cars that are small and superpowered. Renault will make just 1,980 of them, and the 5 Turbo 3E also has the distinction of being Renault’s most powerful-ever road-going car. Renault says it will zoom from zero to 62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.

For all that money, too, Renault says that buyers will go through a rigorous customization process, allowing them to make their 5 Turbo 3E as unique as they want it to be. Early next year, buyers who have paid a reservation fee will be contacted by dealers, and then meet Renault designers to, “create their own exterior and interior livery, selecting the colours and materials for a wide range of features: seats, door panels, dashboard, etc.”

About a year later, in early 2027, buyers will confirm their chosen configuration and then the car will be delivered. Buyers can even choose the number of their 5 Turbe 3E, for a fee.

Renault says the 5 Turbo 3E deserves the “supercar” appellation because of its 6.6-foot width, which is not much slimmer than a Bugatti Chiron. There is also all that grunt, powered by in-wheel electric motors. The car weighs less than 3,200 pounds, which is pretty light for an electric car, and Renault says that its all-electric range is expected to be around 248 miles.

The 5 Turbo 3E will not be sold in the U.S. because of the limited imagination of either Renault, the U.S., or both. The car will be sold in Europe, the U.K., Japan, Australia, and the Middle East, where it is destined to be the coolest car at cars and coffee events in those regions for at least the first few days after the 5 Turbo 3E is out in 2027. In a few decades in the U.S., meanwhile, you might even be able to score a 5 Turbo 3E at a significant discount.
