This Forgotten Porsche Race Car Will Fetch at Least $1 Million at Auction

A piece of Porsche racing history is up for grabs right now.

The first 910 race car is currently up for bid on Bring a Trailer. But historic significance isn’t all this beautiful coupe has going for it—it’s also street-legal.

The 910, or Carrera 10 as it is sometimes called, debuted in 1966 as the successor to the 906. The two vehicles shared a 2.0-liter flat six and lightweight space frame construction, but the follow-up was shorter, even lighter, and rode on a set of 13-inch center-locking wheels just like those used by Formula 1 cars. Unfortunately, these changes weren’t enough to keep up with Ferrari’s prototype race cars or the Ford GT40, and a new competitive model, called the 907, would replace it in 1967. Just 28 examples would roll off the line during the two years it was in production.

The first of those—chassis no. 910-001—is the example currently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer. It was used by Porsche’s factory works team and driven by Hans Herrmann. In 1966, it would claim a quartet of top-three finishes in hill climbs during its debut season. Two years later, it was sold to team driver Rudi Lins, who campaigned the car in endurance races for the rest of that year, its best result coming at the 1,000 Kilometres of Monza where it finished first in class and fourth overall. The next year, Lins would register the vehicle for street use before selling it.

The current seller’s father acquired the vehicle in 1994. In the early 2000s, he would commission a comprehensive refurbishment that wouldn’t be completed until the latter half of the last decade. As part of the project, the vehicle’s white racing livery, which features a striking red nose accent, was repainted. Its magnesium case flat-six was also overhauled and its running gears rebuilt. Other mechanical features include Bosch fuel injection, a five-speed manual transaxle, and a coilover suspension. Since the refurbishment was complete, the car has been imported to the U.S. and has appeared at several classic car events, including the 2023 Amelia Werks Reunion and 2024 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance.

If your interest has been piqued, prepare to spend big. The auction may run through this coming Monday, May 19, but bidding has already eclipsed $1.3 million. The vehicle is being sold with reserve, so it remains to be seen if the final sum, whatever it ends up being, will prove to be enough for the seller.
