Frank Sinatra Gave This 1957 Dual-Ghia Convertible to Ava Gardner. Now It’s up for Grabs.

Here’s your chance to buy one of the most glamorous forgotten cars to come out of the U.S. in the 1950s. And it comes with a pedigree that only makes it even more desirable.

A beautiful 1957 Dual-Ghia Convertible is currently up for sale through St. Louis-based classics dealer Daniel Schmitt & Co. The car itself would be a worthy addition to any collection, but this one has that added distinction of having been given to actress Ava Gardner by her then-husband, Frank Sinatra.

During the 1950s, Dual Motors Corporation owner Eugene Casaroll was searching a way to change the public perception of his brand. Up until that point, the company was mainly known for building military vehicles and industrial generators, so he decided the best way to change lanes was by building an alluring convertible, according to the listing. So, he bought the rights to the Dodge Firebomb concept and commissioned coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia to give it some continental flair. The frame and powertrain were built in Detroit, then shipped to Italy, where the vehicle was outfitted with a stylish body and luxe interior, then back to the U.S. for final assembly.

The resulting Dual-Ghia Convertible was an immediate hit with the rich and famous, including Sinatra and Garner. Ol’ Blue Eye’s production company bought the example currently up for sale new and then gifted it to the Pandora and the Flying Dutchman star. Despite its popularity in Hollywood, the open-top two-door never quite caught on, with only 117 of a planned 150 examples rolling off the line. Of those, only 34 are known to still be around today.

The vehicle up for sale is finished in a lustrous coat of Midnight Blue over a blue and white leather interior with a dark blue soft-top. It’s powered by a 361-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 mated to a three-speed automatic. The car has covered just 41,349 miles in the 68 years since it left the factory. This example is also said to have been treated to a “show-quality” restoration, a claim backed up by the pictures accompanying the listing.

Intrigued? Daniel Schmitt & Co. is asking $349,000 for the convertible. That’s steep, but considering the car’s heritage and rarity, it’s unlikely to dissuade interested parties.
