Mom Says Her Son, 8, Was Not Invited to a Party Because the Birthday Boy’s Mom Is Afraid He Will Steal Her Son’s ‘Shine’

  • A Mumsnet user shared that she and her husband offered to host their son’s friend’s birthday party in their backyard
  • However, the woman revealed that she found out that her 8-year-old son is not invited to the party because the other boy’s mom is worried he will take the “shine” from her son’s special day
  • The woman is now wondering if she’s within her right to tell the other mom that her son will attend the party regardless

A woman revealed that her son isn’t invited to a friend’s birthday party because the friend’s mother is afraid he will steal “the shine” from her child.

The woman shared her experience in the “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet, explaining that her husband used to be a sports coach, “so we have a section of our garden built up and dedicated to that sport.” She also said that her husband uses the area to both play with and coach their son.

The original poster (OP) wrote that during a recent play date with a child from another school, a fellow mom mentioned that she would love to have her son’s birthday party in a place like the OP’s backyard. The OP said that her husband then said the woman was “welcome” to have her son’s party at their place and use their sports setup.

The woman said that it “was then agreed her [son] could have his party in our garden and borrow equipment we [have].” She also said that all other party expenses would be up to the other boy’s mom to provide, noting that the “party is quite soon.”

The problem? The other mom now said the OP’s son isn’t invited.

“She’s now said that she doesn’t think my [son] should come as she’s worried the fact it’s his house/garden and [and that] he is good at the sport will take the shine of her [son] and people will think it’s my [son’s] day instead,” she explaine

The OP said that the other mom also said that the OP’s son would only know a “few” of the other kids anyway, since most of the children go to a different school.

While the OP admitted that her son was never specifically invited, “we just assumed,” adding, “and we probably agreed [to the party] based on that assumption.”

“I don’t think [it’s] fair to have [my son] locked in the house or taken out when his friends and boys his age [are] playing in our garden and am shocked she thinks this is an okay suggestion,” she added.

The woman concluded her post by asking her fellow community members if she’s being “unreasonable” to think that it’s only fair that her son gets to attend a party happening in his own backyard.

Commenters were quick to assure the OP that she has every right to be bothered by the other mom’s behavior.

“I’d be telling her that your garden space is no longer available for the party,” one person replied.

“That’s [such a] rude a response to your very kind offer. I’d also tell her to find somewhere else,” another user wrote. “Totally unfair to your son.”

A third person said: “I would just say it’s [your son’s] home & garden so he’ll be there. [If] she doesn’t like that then she needs to find another venue.”
