Memorial Day and summer are just around the corner and the weather has begun to heat up, so for us that means it’s time to invite some friends and family over, light the barbecue, and grill some of our favorite meats including steaks, burgers, pork shoulder, and lamb chops. And because it’s not ridiculously hot yet we’re still drinking big, juicy red wines, served at a perfect cellar temperature of 55 degrees. Who doesn’t love a bold red from paired with a well marbled or a juicy Zinfandel served with a slow cooked pork shoulder? And don’t forget a well-made aged Croatian wine to pair with double-cut herb encrusted lamb chops. Whatever you’re thinking of grilling this weekend we have a wine that will match perfectly. Here are a few Riojan, Californian, Australian, French, Italian, and Croatian wines to kick your first summer barbecue off in style.

Korta Katarina 2016 Plavac Mali Srednja I Juzna Dalmacija Croatia
Image Credit: Korta Katarina We first visited Korta Katerina over 10 years ago and have enjoyed tasting their new releases each year. We had a bottle of their 2016 Plavac Mali in storage and opened this week it to test the evolution. We were obviously pleasantly surprised because we’re recommending it as a wine to drink now and pair with grilled double cut lamb chops. It has aromas of dark fruits including black plum, cassis, smoked charcuterie, dried herbs, and tobacco leaf that transition to flavors of dried cherry, plum, and saddle leather on the palate.
