The Lexus Surf LX Concept Wants to Turn Beach Time Into an Off-Road Adventure

Lexus has just unveiled a new version of its flagship SUV that is suited for life at the beach.

The Japanese luxury marque brought a concept called the Surf LX to this week’s Pipe Pro World Surf League event in Oahu, Hawaii. The one-off was built to celebrate and expansion of the partnership between the automaker and professional surfing’s governing body.

The fourth-generation LX 600, which debuted in 2021, is Lexus’s version of the full-size J300 Land Cruiser that parent company Toyota has never deemed fit for a U.S. release (the current American Land Cruiser is based on the mid-size J250 Prado). It’s a hulking vehicle—it can seat up to seven adults—decked out in all the luxury fixings you expect from the marque, but that can still be taken off-road with confidence. But this new concept is designed for slightly more serene adventures.

The Surf LX was designed with the waves in mind, as its name makes abundantly clear. It’s finished in a coastal-inspired colorway that combines a matte blue body, white roof, and black trim. It’s also equipped with a custom Exo-Cage that includes an illuminated rear ladder that provides easy access to the roof rack even in low-light situations. Rounding out the exterior details is a set of 20-inch grey wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires so that the vehicle can cross any terrain it may encounter with ease.

The interior cabin features all the bells and whistles found in the standard LX, including genuine leather upholstery. The biggest change, though, can be found in the rear cargo area. The space has been redesigned with surfers in mind, and now includes a board rack, waxing table, turf changing mat, integrated cooler, and slide-out storage. The last of those features include ventilated compartments to keep everything in the right place and free of pungent odors.

No technical specs or performance numbers were provided, but the standard LX comes equipped with a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-6. The mill is mated to a 10-speed automatic and produces a maximum 409 hp and 479 ft lbs of torque. The LX is big but it can still sprint from zero to 60 mph in just over six seconds.

Unfortunately, the Surf LX looks to be a one-off for now. But Lexus has used past concepts as an opportunity to show off new add-on parts and features. We’re sure there are more than a few surfers out there who would love to add an Eco-Cage or board rack to their SUV.
