When it comes to red-carpet jewelry, some translate better than others. But this year’s subject, “Superfine: Tailoring, Black Style,” was right on the money—or the opulent diamond brooch, rather. The theme of the evening reflected that of this year’s Costume Institute exhibition, which examines the origins and intricacies of Black dandyism through its history, inspired by guest curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
Those intricacies include a sharp focus on the accessories that have helped to define the look of the Black dandy, from two-toned brogues, pocket squares, and custom fedoras to refined watches and, yes, the jeweled lapel pin or brooch.
There was no shortage of the current on this year’s carpet. But even where they weren’t part of a look, this year’s best jewelry channeled the opulence of the lapel accessory, through highly detailed craftsmanship and the occasional gigantic gemstone—all impeccably placed and worn with the swagger of a true dandy.
Here, the Met Gala’s best jewelry moments from the star-studded carpet.

Lewis Hamilton in Briony Raymond
Image Credit: Getty Images Among a sea of bold looks, the British race car driver and Met Gala co-chair brought a quieter elegance in a white custom Wales Bonner tuxedo. But it was a vintage pearl-and-diamond brooch on the lapel and a vintage Briony Raymond floral brooch made of white, yellow, and pink diamonds on Hamilton’s custom Stephen Jones hat that truly made it dandy.
-
Anne Hathaway in Bulgari
Image Credit: Getty Images With a Carolina Herrera white shirt and striped skirt inspired by the archives of legendary editor and OG dandy André Leon Talley, a major statement necklace was the only option for a finishing touch. The actress wore a Bulgari Cosmic Vault high jewelry necklace with a 123.35-carat sugarloaf sapphire center stone to complete her look.
-
Damson Idris in Didris
Image Credit: Getty Images The F1 actor’s Tommy Hilfiger suit may have come with a custom Swarovski-crystal-encrusted racing helmet, but it was the lapel pin from his own recently-launched jewelry brand, Didris, that made the look.
-
Priyanka Chopra in Bulgari
Image Credit: Getty Images Never one to shy away from a statement look, the actress paired a custom polka-dot skirt suit by Balmain with an emerald-and-diamond Magnus Emerald necklace from Bulgari that featured a massive 241.06-carat emerald stone in the center.
-
A$AP Rocky in Bulgari Briony Raymond
Image Credit: Getty Images Another co-chair of the event, the Harlem-born rapper paired a custom tuxedo and raincoat from his own brand Awge with strategic jewels. There was the requisite diamond brooch in pink gold with a cushion-cut peridot; a diamond necklace set with a 12.29 pear-cut ruby surrounded by 22 round diamonds (D-F VVS totaling 9.30 carats) and pavé-set diamonds (D-F IF-VVS totaling 37.16 carats) worn over his tie; a pair of diamond cluster earrings; and a slew of rings, including a Serpenti in diamonds and gold with two emerald eyes, all of which were from Bulgari. (He also wore an Octo Finissimo watch, but unfortunately, you couldn’t see it.) Another major focal point of the look? A custom umbrella by Briony Raymond with a diamond-encrusted handle and top … shaped like a gun.

Pharrell Williams in Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.
Image Credit: Getty Images The Met Gala co-chair and Louis Vuitton men’s creative director made the most of his access to both the French fashion house and Tiffany & Co.’s high jewelry workshops by outfitting his custom jacket entirely in pearls. He wore the look with Tiffany’s Coronation ring, a yellow gold setting with over 20 carats of yellow diamonds.
