Toddler Swipes Mom’s Wedding Rings and Drops Them Down Door Frame (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Magda Guth’s husband, Kyle, was putting away laundry when he “heard a plunking noise” from the hallway
  • Their 2-year-old son, Wylder, had snatched Magda’s wedding ring and dropped it into the strike plate hole
  • Magda had to rip apart the entire door frame to retrieve the diamond band

When it comes to toddlers, curiosity is inevitable — and so are the messes they create. From misplaced remote controls to scribbles on walls, most incidents are minor.

But one mother of two found herself getting out the power tools and dismantling part of her home after her 2-year-old son dropped her wedding band down a door frame.

The incident occurred while Magda Guth’s husband, Kyle Guth, was putting away laundry in their bedroom. Their son, Wylder, who is exceptionally tall for his age, wandered into the connecting bathroom and snatched two rings from a jewelry box left near the sink.

“My husband was the one who actually saw him do it,” Magda tells PEOPLE exclusively. “My guess is that my box wasn’t as far back on the counter as it normally is, and he’s a tall boy, and was able to stretch his arms far enough to reach the box.”

Moments later, Kyle “heard a plunking noise like putting change into a vending machine.” Their son then turned the corner with only one ring in hand.

“He asked Wylder what he did, and he walked over to the door frame and pointed to the hole where the door latches,” Magda says.

Magda says she wasn’t upset by her son’s innocent mistake, but “more surprised than anything.”

“Surprised of the odds of that happening and relieved that he didn’t throw it down the sink or flush it down the toilet,” she admits. “I wasn’t freaking out because I knew the ring wasn’t going anywhere, but yes, I was anxious to get it out.”

With her husband leaving to take their son out, the 40-year-old mom took matters into her own hands. “My husband did ask me if I wanted to wait for him to get back, but I wasn’t waiting,” she recalls.

Magda started by cutting into the bottom of the door frame, assuming the ring had fallen straight down. When she didn’t find it there, she kept going.

“There were some janky, bent nails in that hollow. I don’t think that frame was put together correctly during the build,” she shares. “So I was like ‘I’ll just make another incision halfway up to see if it’s there.’ Which led to another, and another.” That’s when she decided to rip apart the whole frame.

Still, with no luck, she called her “jack-of-all-trades” neighbor, Seann, for some assistance. Using the metal rod from a pant hanger, he began fishing in the narrow space along the door jamb.

“There was a very small space between the part of the frame that connects to the jamb part,” she explains. “We couldn’t see anything with the light on our phones, so we took apart a pant hanger and Seann started fishing at the very bottom of that little space. And he pulled it out.”

Magda was beyond ecstatic to have her ring back, but wasn’t done with the job as she still had to repair the torn-apart door frame.

The mother of two shared a clip of the ordeal on TikTok, garnering over 3.8 million views. The video serves as a reminder to other parents not to leave their valuables in easy-to-reach places.

“If you think they can’t get to it, they can. If you think they won’t find a way, they will,” Magda warns. “That goes for anything! But if it is something you value, jewelry, your wallet, passport, keys, a memento… put it waaaaay up high!”
