Woman Says Her Husband Is Upset She Watches a TV Show He Doesn’t Like Which Makes Him Feel ‘Relegated’ to Their Basement

A woman’s Friday night TV routine is causing tension in her marriage.

In a post on Reddit‘s “Am I the A——?” forum, the 35-year-old woman shared that her favorite show is RuPaul’s Drag Race, and she looks forward to watching the new episode when it airs every week.

The problem? Her husband is not a fan of the reality show and because the couple lives in “a relatively small house with one area to watch TV,” he “feels the need” to retreat into their unfinished basement for 90 minutes while she enjoys her TV time.

“It’s recently caused a lot of contention in our relationship because he feels that he shouldn’t have to be relegated to the basement on Friday nights after he works hard,” the woman wrote, before arguing that she doesn’t think her Drag Race sessions are that “unreasonable.”

“This is the only show that I watch when it airs, and I don’t like to record it and watch it later because I don’t want to see spoilers on social media which are nearly impossible for me to avoid,” she explained. “I just don’t think I’m being unreasonable by wanting to watch one show on one night of the week for an hour and a half.”

The wife also pointed out that she is certainly “not forcing” her husband to go to the basement and that he could “easily go into the bedroom instead.”

In the comments section, many fellow Redditors questioned why the husband was making such a fuss over a small thing.

“I can absolutely understand not wanting to watch that show, but any normal person would just go do something else for a little bit, no big deal,” one person wrote.

Others pointed out that the husband is making a choice to “sulk away” to the basement when he has plenty of other options.

“He doesn’t need to go to the basement — he decides to go the basement,” one commenter argued. “He could wear headphones and watch something on his phone if he wanted to. He could also go to your bedroom instead of the basement if that’s an option. He’s intentionally making it inconvenient for himself because he isn’t getting his way.”

Another person said: “He can literally do anything except use the TV for 90 mins. Go see a friend, get takeout, go on a walk, exercise, nap, play on his phone, etc. He’s being unreasonable and kinda controlling.”

Someone else even suggested that the husband could turn the situation into an advantage, writing, “Sounds like he’s got an hour and a half every week to finish the basement.”

Another Redditor jokingly pointed out that the wife’s 90 minutes of TV hardly compares to some husbands’ sports watching habits.

“If this was a man watching a sports event, no one would even be commenting on the length of the game. He will live,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “Ask any wife of a sports fan if 1.5 hours for 16 weeks is shorter than all the seasons of any sport.”

Attempting to see the situation from the husband’s perspective, one Redditor asked the woman, “Could this be him making a bid for your attention? Usually Friday nights are prime time for couples to spend quality time together. He may be feeling frustrated that you’re focusing on an activity that only you enjoy (reality TV) instead of doing a couple’s activity.”
